You guys might remember the not-petition-petition we put up asking people to sign for interest in keeping the FMM open for 24 hours(it wasn't a petition so that's clear). Well that fell flat on its face and that won't be happening.
However, after talking with an SSRO and working some things out - we've finally gotten the best possible outcome from all of that - 28 computers in College Lane and 16 on De-Hav in the LRCs.
March 2015: the University has created two specialist software spaces in the LRCs; these will house high-spec PCs each configured with additional specialist software. All students can make use of the new service on a drop-in basis.
44 x high-specification PCs (3.6GHz i7 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti graphic cards)
Configured with the following specialist programs in addition to the usual software available on all networked PCs:
- Adobe Premier
- Ricardo Wave
- Unreal Engine
From mid-March 2015 graphics tablets and pens will also be available to students through a booking process - details to follow.
College Lane LRC Room LG2: 28 high-spec PCs
See College Lane LRC floorguide
de Havilland LRC Room L160: 16 high-spec PCs
See de Havilland LRC floorguide
Open: 24/7 all year
except UH closed periods – see LRC Opening Times
and when booked for student training sessions – daytime bookings are displayed on the room door each morning.
This new service comes in response to feedback from students, SSROs and Schools which identified a need for greater access to University specialist software - until now this has been available only within Schools or Computer Labs.
Schools were consulted regarding the specialist software requirements for this new service. Any requests for the provision of future specialist software should be directed through School academic staff.
Thank you to Daniel Kiss for making people aware of it.
