Ok so ive decided to work some more on an old character that I never finished.I started it just a bit before uni I got fairly far into the head sculpt and started on a body (but ill probably redo that). Originally it was just a head sclupt but I figured id see how far I can push it. Now I want him to be my engine mechanic. Heres the head sculpt.

Looking only really at the anatomy and such as he isnt really textured yet and those hair effects are just thrown on quickly.

Crit is appreciated (ignore from the neck down)  :)

Only ended up having a day for my texturing brief.  Stayed up and managed to get it "done". Not at all happy with this one but heres the result:

Feel free to crit and give advice for future projects but god knows I'm never touching this one again! XD

Worked a little more on my mechanic. So Ive quad drawn the head. I've made a couple heads before and I used some ref to make sure I was doing the topo right. Only thing is that the refs were really varied so im not so sure if this is wrong in places. Heres a  few quick renders to show the topo.

Any help is appreciated. :)

I also had a bit of a playaround because why not. Thought it looked kinda cool XD

Wow, that sculpt is looking real nice! I think the wireframe render is cool, looks a little arty to me! Now one of the briefs in second year (for VFX and some 3D) contains topology. Now while I didn't take it, let's say you wanted to be a little bit sneaky. If you were to, let's say, head into rex, look in student'16-17, level 5 film modelling and texturing, there may be some exampleImages of topology... That might offer you some pointers in getting nice tidy topology, although make sure you leave room to work things out for yourself!

Top stuff!

Ok so I checked out those topology files (thanks again Marcus) and Im happy enough with the topology. Hopefully no one is gonna come along and tell me its wrong (but if it is please do tell me lol). So I went ahead and Uv'd and did some zbrush projection. The head has a mouth sack (eww) and proper eyelids now too. I then went ahead and tested a displacement map out. Im really happy with how it turned out so far. Ive always had loads of issues with Zbrush displacement but the time i spent trying to fix the shark seems to have payed off because theres only a couple (fixable) issues this time.

Did some quick render tests.

Sculpt:

Low poly

Displacement:

Ignore the little issue at the bottom. Thats just there because I'm too lazy to remove it atm. Now I'm going to try and fix the shoulders up a bit and improve the sculpt overall Including working on the pores a bit as they arent really coming through and making it less symmetrical. Then its on to texturing, eyes, teeth and tongue, then Im gonna make a cigarette for him. Then when all thats done Im going to work on a body, Im thinking like a greaser kinda look, with the leather jacket and vest. Maybe he didn't quite grow out of it. Dunno yet. I really want to rig the whole thing as well. I HATE rigging bodies but I love rigging faces. Any advice for that is appreciated.

Id love some crit on the sculpt as these are i kinda the final stages before I wana leave the sculpt be. :)

edit: Looks like I accidentally forgot to use the ZBRUSH base mesh lol. The displacement is much more accurate now. :)

Also if anyone has any recommendations on how to properly paint skin and what software to use etc id really appreciate it. I've never done it before.

Looks really good! I'm not an expert in sculpting and all that stuff by any means, so I might be wrong, but I think you should look at more reference for your wrinkles. For example, the ones in the forehead feel a little too thick and stong to me, and I think they usually have a little depression in the middle. Also I think the wrinkles in the mouth are usually thiner and go in two directions, see below:

Also, you have probably seen this, but for shading realistic skin this is super useful http://www.anderslan.../tut_skin1.html

Good job!

Thanks man! Yeah Im still working on the smaller details of the face. Wrinkle reference is really really varied and the one I was using seems to contrast with a lot of other ref.  I also haven't made a skin shader for it yet. This one is just a gummy looking thing I threw on for now. Ill be making the shader when I start texturing. :) Thanks for the crit!

If you could post your ref that'd help with feedback; as you say they always vary. One thing I think is usually consistent with most faces is the labionasal fold; yours seems to be split a bit tightly so the two folds pinch (one around the corner of the mouth, the other above it, coming down from the nose under the cheek). That and the large crease coming up from under the chin, wrapping around the side of the jaw look a little odd to me. Again though, if it's in the ref, ignore all of the above :) Great stuff though man, keep posting!

Thanks a lot for the crit man. This work by Adam Skutt has been my main ref throughout. Though there has been a whole bunch of other images Ive been looking at here and there. Not sure where I got the weird chin thing from but now you point it out it looks really odd to me too. Ill reduce its effect a bit and see how it looks. Same for the corners of the mouth.   :)

Started painting some skin on in Zbrush. Anyone know any good alphas for veins etc. Or any good recourses/ referances that might help me out. My googling isn't doing much for me.
