Tail of Inari So Far: Moodboards and Temple Interior Concept

Since receiving my feedback; I decided on three small environments I'd like to focus on for this project. They are doable by myself; as I'll be making assets that I can repeat to fill up a scene:

* Inari Temple - Exterior

*Inari Temple - Interior

*Akai Mori Forest

If this were to be an actual game, Id have the Forest and the Temple on different sides of the world map; but I'm going to incorporate both the forest and temple into just one small map. The Temple will be on a higher, mountainous ground; and at the foot of it will be the forest; so it's easy access for demonstration purposes. I will draw up the level map later on this week to show on here.

But for now; I have achieved creating moodboards of the three environments; with c arefully considered color pallets. CC Welcome as always:

And here are some early concepts of the temple interior from a top-down perspective; showing the Inari stone statue of her playing the shamisen

Nice stuff Paige. If you're still in need of some HD references, this might be a nice pack for you, and it's totally free. http://www.photobash.org/kyoto-temples

I was aware of the Kyoto Inari ; and thats what im going to base my temple off of; but i could never find enough decent images :)  Thanks again!

Tail of Inari: Pitch #2 Updates and more Concepts ft. IceBridget and a HUMAN Kitsune!

Feedback:

After yesterday's pitch about my chosen game idea, Tail of Inari.  Here is the feedback from each lecturer I received;

Neil:

Suggested having a dialogue system similar to the beloved PAC games I talk and refer to a lot. Also pointed out that I need to have a clear target audience.

Lewis:

Also mentioned bringing in a PAC-style dialogue system similar to The Curse of Monkey Island (one of our favorites!), and also told me to consider different camera angles - whether the camera in-game will follow the character or be fixed.

Dan:

Also brought up considering what camera angle the final product will use.

Frank:

If you want cute characters (referring to Maiku's big head and young age)...Keep it cute!!!

Phil:

Consider changing the title of the project to fit Maiku and Kitsune's story; because Inari is only there as a guide, not a main character.

More Concept Art:

I showed the Maiku drawing to Bridget, and after telling her that I still wasn't happy with Maiku's design as he looked too old and not cute, she decided to help me and using her magical 2D powers, came up with several cutesy designs for Maiku - and a Human version of kitsune.

We discussed how effective it would be turning Kitsune into a loveable, almost sister-like companion to Maiku, appearing younger and cheekier. I would definitely love to play her as a character - so what do you guys think! Should Kitsune be a fox still...or this adorable human-like character!

Hi Page! I did a few more concept drawings this time trying them in scenes! I just couldn't stop experimenting with them. you can of course use these designs towards the development brief lolooooo I may also be working on a little run cycle for your main character in my spare time, as its too tempting not to. nothing too complex though ;)

Aw Bridget, these are awesome!  I can really feel the life within the characters now !Thank you so much for spending time to do these alongside your own project :')

It really makes me want to keep Kit as a human now :)  She looks so cheeky and so forgiving if she gets into mischief; and Maiku looks like a big protective brother!

I'll show these to some lecturers and get their opinion on if i should keep Kit as a fox or as this cutie human :3 - i like her running on all fours as a human though, that's pretty neat!

Thank you =^_^=

Tail of Inari So Far: Basic Greybox Test #1 and possible Puzzles

Hi everyone! Here's a small video I made demonstrating the key areas of the game. I'm still figuring out the puzzle systems so they're gonna be a bit vague at the moment!

1. Maiku starts off in the Sand Garden, just before the bridge. There will be another character here to interact with; who is raking the sand. The Player will have to give something to Sand Raker / distract Sand Raker, so they can acquire the RAKE.

tumblr_o93ef9HeF11tstd16o1_500.gif

2.After crossing the bridge, the player can go to the "Tree of Wisdom", a talking tree who has tangled LIGHTS in his branches. The player will have to use the RAKE to get the LIGHTS out.

tumblr_mdhmnc3Mp61r4okofo1_500.gif

3. Maiku then walks to what will be The Cave. Here there will be a stone statue puzzle, where the player will have to move statues in a certain way so that the cave door opens, which will be the end of the level.

anigif_original-grid-image-24470-1489062

4. Maiku goes up some stairs leading to the Inari Temple - here he can go inside and hang the LIGHTS. Goddess Inari will reward your act of kindness by giving you a piece of paper with random colors on them. They will eventually reflect what order the STATUES have to be in to open the cave.

tumblr_nl4hgyHLka1s73lbio1_500.gif

5. Next to the Temple is Maiku's house. I was going to make this a seperate room, but due to time, I just want to focus on the temple. I might have a lunchbox or something left here that Maiku can pick up so he can give some FOOD to the Sand Raker so he can give you the RAKE.

Wheres-My-Mac-and-Cheese-Liz-Lemon-30-Ro

6. Maiku then walks along the cliffside which will be towards the village; which wont be in the game, but I just wanted to make an indicator of where it would be.

Enjoy the really basic video:

Tail of Inari So Far: Pitch #3 Feedback and Greybox Screenshots!!

After my pitch today, here is the feedback I received from each lecturer

Feedback:

Frank:

With the help of Bridget, we have managed to reach the CUTENESS expectation! We should definitely keep "Kit" as a little girl. ON the right track to appeal to a defined audience-type now.

Ian:

I've managed to meet the SCALE expectation, and have the ability to expand but not necessarily needed Ian suggested that instead of a floating island idea which Bridget and i threw about; why not keep the island effect, but have the land on top of a turtle or another sea-creature; or even have the island within a turtle's shell.

Thanks Frank and Ian!

In-game screenshots of Greybox:

I'd also like to have an Overhead Map like in the screenshot above; which was inspired by Tales of Monkey Island Episode 1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal:

Back with some refined sheets now adding the eyes as a test and grouping up things in a wee better format.

lanVRP5.png

will do a few action shots with these characters in a bit! But first must update my own projects work. Best of luck to Page and her development!

This is coming on well, try to keep those same lovely pastel colours in your final 3D work, they will give the level a beautifully considered colour palette.

Thanks Martin! And will do; Bridget's given me such a good color scheme it would seem silly if I didn't try to match the pastel colors! I want my game to have an almost Harvest Moon / Animal Crossing color style; do you think they're appropriate inspirations?

The grass would look so cool with animal crossing like texture patterns. maybe petal shapes instead of squares!

Tail of Inari So Far: Adding Trees to the Greybox#

I've added a really basic tree model that i've been working on so far in zbrush. I made the petal texture in photoshop but been told that it's too realistic, and would love some feedback on some stylized approaches I could take?
