Here we go again...

There's something innocent and pure about a child's connection with nature. For some that connection may be the only good thing in their lives. Catkin tells the story of a young child in a bad home who's only escape is the call of nature in her rundown back garden - and the soft song of a small bird.

Long story short I'm after your feels this year.

So I'll kick this off by throwing everything I've done so far at y'all. Nice and overwhelming. As always my arms are open to critique!

PREVIS/ANIMATIC:

This is my most recent version. Still working on cutting the length, aiming for about 1:40 - 1:30. There will be music! Currently in the process of writing it.

*Youtube is still processing this video at the time of posting, it may not play right away. Sorry!

CATKIN:                         ~Highlighted drawings show my decisions through each stage~

Catkin is a young girl somewhere around 5-6 years old. She's actively neglected and abused by her mother, and she lives in a very poor area.

So this is where I'm at with Catkin herself currently. I'm leaning towards the school uniform look, though I also like the idea of her having an oversized shirt as though her parents can't even be bothered getting her own clothes. These are a little neat looking as well, she needs to look a lot messier for the final design to show the neglect she's going through. The finished design will be a bit more simple as well, to accommodate animating her easily.

THE BIRD:

Don't have too much for him at the moment. I've decided on the species (Great tit) and I already have a stylised design for him. The main challenge here is going to be making the design of the wings suitable for animation.

THE ENVIRONMENT:

Think run down council estate home. Trash everywhere, garden overgrown, generally poor area. My idea developed a bit more since these initial sketches but they give you a general idea of what I'm going for style wise.

The drawings are as beautiful as ever Charlotte :) One thought about the girl - young children who dress themselves will often put clothes on inside out or back to front (or both). Yes the oversized shirt is a good idea too. Socks are definitely one up, one down, and frequently not the same colour.

Is this going to make me cry? I cry easily you know...the ending is beautifully poetic. Would it be too fantasy for the drawing to grow itself around the room as the bird sings? Even for the walls to perhaps fade away into the trees - if you've ever read the book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak there's a lovely image of Max's bedroom as it fades into the forest

Your previs reminds me of the places my wife used to visit when she worked for a charity that assessed children from deprived backgrounds about whether they would get to go on holidays that the charity paid for. That was a such a heart wrenching job.

Extra bleakness - tilt the bed so it doesn't line up with the walls. Bare floor boards. Peeling wallpaper, damp / mould growing on the walls.

New previs!

Trimmed some clips and got rid of most of the ripped live action clips. Left the birdy bits in since I'm probably gonna heavily reference those when I come to animate not because I'm lazy.

Didn't get much shorter though... And I promise there'll be music and foley in the next one.

If you cry I've done my job right lol.

I kinda want to keep it grounded in reality, I think it keeps it a bit more... relatable? It could be nice to have her drawings grow as she makes them though as those shots will all be extreme close ups, as though we're seeing into her imagination. Then maybe have it all fade back into the drawing for the wide shot at the end? A little bitter-sweetness.

Well I have a plan for the next version now!

Close to final clothing concepts!

i3H2EA4.jpg

Very much liking number 1, I think I'd really push the scruffy kid look with colour on that design. Gonna try it with the tights from 2 to soften up the overall shape, plus that's less detail to draw. Maybe 2's skirt as well.

The oversized shirts are reminding me a little too much of Boo now, don't want to go there really. And 5 is to foldy. I struggle with simple lol.

Throw your crit at me.

I have nooooo idea what to go for. She's always been ginger haired in my mind but I'm liking some of the brown haired ones as well. I may put simple highlight streaks in her hair to indicate the curl a bit more, but I need to do some animation tests to see how much work that will cause me.

I defo need opinions on this, I suppose that'll be a job for Tuesday's presentation.

Had a play with adding dirt to her as well. Defo gonna go the textures route as seen in the last couple of designs, it's something very manageable with after effects and it means I only need to animate a rough decal, as the details will come with track mattes and other settings.

Lots of bird concept work to show today. Buckle up.

So continuing from the anatomy sketch stuff I did, I did some more stylised renditions. Ideas for the shape of the body and wings and such:

eu3Bor2.png

EXhWXZI.png

Went for the angular design as it matches well with Catkin's look, did my construction turnaround and mapped out the wings:

SI2AAor.png

Wings are mostly solid save for the primary feathers, but they don't completely break that solid shape.

Moved on to some experiments with the lineart, again went for the angular drawing style:

isKALkW.png

And last but not least some colour. There's not much leeway in terms of what colours I can use on a great tit, so it's more of a subtle difference between shades and hues.

And that's my day gone. Work on the previs will follow tomorrow.

Previs version 3 - now with music!

No foley tho... I'm not 100% happy with the score just yet, I'm gonna spend more time with it this week and try to simplify it and work on the timing.

Animation test for the bird! Just a flight cycle consisting of 6 frames, spaced on 2's.

zW5a4i6.gif

Needed to see how viable the line art was for animation, and it's pretty okay I think. I'd have gone a lot quicker if I wasn't binge watching Harry Potter at the same time.

Gonna upload a coloured version tomorrow probably.

Probably.

Coloured the animation test. Very much liking the Animcouleur and Animdessin extensions in photoshop for doing this.

Environment time! These are some sketches for the kitchen.

Going for trashy, dingy and cramped. The doorways where the light is coming from lead to the garden.

Top left is from the previs, but I'm now leaning more toward top and bottom right for the layout.

Due to the house spaces being much more reliant on perspective I'm probably going to model them in maya when I've got a final design going. Painting over a graybox layout will speed up my background painting significantly and help me stay consistent.

That looks excellent. One thought - it would be nice if we saw a hint of the other wing on the other side. Could this be done by just copying the animated bird in after effects, darkening the copy, placing it under the bird we currently see and transforming it a bit so we see a hint of the other wing sticking out the front - if it could be time offset by one frame to lag that might also look good.
