Hey everyone!! This is my first post on 3D Hit so I wanted to share some of the work I have done. I will be taking 2D animation in September 2017 at The University of Hertfordshire and I cant wait to start! I have such a deep passion for traditional animation and I am completely fascinated by it. When watching a good 2D animation, I can literally feel the life breathed into it, and the amount of hard work and dedication it took to create something so pure and special. Milt Kahl is one of my favourites, I love his work on 101 Dalmatians, and the realism to the character's personalities and minor actions. There's a tiny moment which I love in the film, which is when Roger is sitting down and he checks the clock in his wall, and looks at his watch and flicks his wrist to see if the time is wrong, but in fact the time has just flown by. The fluidity in him flicking his watch and bringing his watch up to his ear is impeccable. Anyway, I'm dragging on, so I'll just show a bit about my work.

Here are a couple digital character designs that I've done recently, I haven't really developed the first guy, all I know so far is that he is a grumpy old tax collector, who hates his job and steals from the people of the city. As you can notice he doesn't have a nose... I have no explanation why he has no nose, in all honestly I just randomly came up with it on the spot and thought it looked cool. The second character is a "Spirit" from my story. In my story, once you die, your spirit lives on and is stuck in this sort of liquid/translucent jelly form. I was trying out something new here in this character design, developing what these spirit's forms would look like, and whether you can see things inside their bodies (like the brain and the foetus shown).

Here are some Digital studies that I have done in the past, one is a background painting of Tokyo, and the other is a portrait. Here I was practicing different techniques in digital painting. Through doing the portrait, I was breaking out of my comfort zone, using brushes I wouldn't usually use when digital painting, which helped me expand my knowledge on what certain brushes are good for.

Here are a couple of pencil studies that I have worked on in the past, one is with an orange colour pencil, which had a different texture to most colour pencils, it almost felt like charcoal. The first piece is a study from a sculpture; I loved the exaggeration in the sculpture's face, the way it seemed as though his whole face was dragging down alongside his frown. I also felt this would be good practice as he was an older man, so he had more wrinkles and details. The second drawing is an older drawing I did, where I sat down and used nothing but a mechanical pencil. It was a great tool to create realistic hair, but I found it extremely difficult to get smooth tones on the skin.

Here is a digital painting I did a little while back, of Kamaji the boiler man from Spirited Away, in a more realistic and different style. I chose the scene from the movie where Chihiro/Sen has been told to go to Kamaji and ask him for a job. I have tried to capture the moment where he denies her the job, and I added his long arm pointing telling her to leave. I wanted  major contrast between the heat of the furnace on the left and the empty space on the right, so I decided to make the right side darker. I used the rule-of-thirds to get the focus point on Kamaji's face, but that was not the only focus point I wanted to have in the piece. I took a technique which Steven Spielberg uses a lot in his films, where he "frames" the area he wants focussed on, for example having a character stand in front of the camera but you can see the focus point between the arm and their body (Schindler's List). What I did was put Kamaji's teapot in the foreground, and in-between the pot and the handle you can see his finger pointing. I'll stop rambling on now, this is what doing A Level Media Studies turns you into  lolooooo

Hey Guys! I'd like to introduce you to Robin. She's an aggressive little bird, with hair kissed by fire. She's closest to her father, having quite a harsh/teasing relationship with him, where she often makes fun out of his facial hair and ends up going too far to the point where its not funny anymore. She often copies her older brother, which annoys the hell out of him, causing him to act quite bitter towards her, but she loves him anyway. Her brother's dream has always been to fly, and its something he's wanted since he was a kid, but when Robin came into the picture, she was obsessed with the same concept. Robin is known as a "little bird" around the town, as she always runs around pretending to fly, with her cape that her father made for her. This annoyed her brother even more, as there was never any attention brought to him in this topic, and never got made a cape to run around in and pretend to be a bird. She was always the favourite, but never to her Mother, she always adored the son, causing him to be a little mama's boy. This jealousy was inspired by real life, as I remember getting extremely annoyed at my sister, as whenever I came up with an idea to do something, whether it be draw something or make something, she'd end up copying me and recreating what I did. She always got praise from my parents, and they would never encourage her to come up with her own ideas. Anyway, here are some character design expression sheets:

This is a digital painting I have done, based on my story. If you have read what I have wrote in my other posts, my story is based majorly in two "worlds", The Spirit world and the human world. These two worlds are actually in the same world, but they are usually always separated completely, making it seem as though they are from another world. The Spirits live in a city in the sky, and they worship the humans down below. The humans live on earth, and worship the their dead relatives who have taken their spirit form and live above the clouds. I imagined that a certain spirit fell to the human world, and that it is full of fascination with everything around it. It sees a firefly glowing in the darkness, so it puts up it's finger, and mimics the bug, representing a relationship between the spirits above and the earth below. I wanted to contrast between it's abnormal, weird-looking form, with the way that it acts.

I know you're not getting all too much feedback on your work right now. (Mostly because people are making use of the last few weeks of Summer) But please keep it coming. I like the stories. (Can't help you all too much from an artistic point unfortunately)

Nice studies! Some interesting characters too! Robin seems to have great potential. Do you plan on taking her further? An illustration telling a bit more of her story visually perhaps?
