What's up, its ya boy back again for year 3.

This is my personal work thread that I'll be using in semester A.

Working on portfolio piece number uno at the moment, grey boxed out what I had in mind. I'm super early in the layout at the moment so i'm looking for crit on composition, lighting, stuff that works stuff that don't. Hit me up, tell me what you think. Would enjoy hearing thoughts and suggestions.

This looks amazing, I'm a huge fan of high sci-fi stuff like this :) My only criticism, and its minor one, would be to reduce the amount of cables in the scene. Especially the ones covering the negative space in the roof, I think having that be a bit more open would look a bit nicer. Although it may be that the cables will work more once your'e out of the grey boxing stage. Either way I think this is looking awesome.

Thanks :) Nice to see first years using 3dHit, good luck with year 1!

Yeah, the cables aren't adding the effect I would like right now, planning on giving them a rework today.

This is a very good start. Love the wires, especially the way they are going into the back of that screen.

Those light colours are really not so nice in my opinion though. I guess you were trying to go for somehting a bit different with the colours? or maybe a monitor calibration thing? But that pink doesn't work at all for me, and the blue/green colour isn't terrible but doesn't pop as a nice or logical colour either to me. I know its scifi but think more logically about what colours the future would use, LED lighting likely, i can't imagine someone going we need to set these to pink in our base. Colour like red and orange would often be used to make things pop as a warning, i think that logic would continue.

I think yellow's saturated oranges and a less cyan blue would look a lot better, even slightly off white would work well although could give it that CG look I guess. I would look at Prometheus. The whole colour scheme is stunning in that film.

The other thing is its feeling a little cliche scifi base at the moment. Maybe think about a detail or style that could help push it into a more interesting piece of artwork. Maybe the lights are retro hanging from the ceiling instead of the same old light panels everywhere as an example of what I mean. Just a though! At the moment the piece reads as techincally sound but I don't feel any sort of interest or wow factor to the environment. (I know its early days with it!)

^ I actually quite like the lights. I think the colour choice gives a cyber punk/80s throwback vibe, which is kinda cool (kinda reminds me of the colour scheme in hyper light drifter, if anyone's ever played that).

the model looks awesome though, I can't to see how it turns out ;3;

Yeah I definitely need to play with the colours of the lights, the reason I used pink was because I imagined that to be a bar/club type thing. Then the blue strip lights were just classic sci-fi.

I totally agree that the piece has no "hero asset" or main feature, I'm going to have to work toward that in mind.

Cheers Alex, nice to see you on here hope all is going well. :)

Added some more stuff to the scene, took the cables out and replaced them with neater ones hooked into the metal beams. Alot of the assets are still not UV'd so the light maps are still a little weird. Added the TV screens and the hologram screen, the hologram material is a little weird also needs some work. Time to unwrap everything else

I love that slidy thing! That is epic. Love the flickery screens as well. They are looking super cool. For a cool feature maybe you could have an interesting staircase leading down to the bottom level?

Thanks man :) You read my mind, only reason I haven't put a staircase in is because i'm not sure where to put it. I'll play around with the layout

Yo, update on my scene, still a few things that I find strange that I need to address;

To long, video needs to be waaaayyyy shorter

Finish remaining assets

Fix some materials, roughness/metallic maps still playing up

animate left door

Fix glowing cableson the main ship

Add some sort of texture to background buildings

Add skydome

change the colour of the left door from blue or add more blue metal to the left side of the scene

Ships in the background stop after 30 seconds

make main door for the ship, cant leave it noclippin' through the wall...

Play with lighting, alot.

Anything you think I should be doing different or any new ideas hit me up, again I'd love to hear your thoughts :)

The only thing that immediately sticks out to me is that the fans looks a little bit 2D texture-y.

Perhaps your holo-trees could be a little sexier.

Love it though :)

Still a few lighting problems to sort out and also the heat haze at the back of the ship. Is the lighting better or does it need another rework?

I'm going to change the fans on the door to geo like you mentioned Chris, that'll definitely spice it up a little.

I've tried my best to make the holo-trees sexier but I think the material needs some more love

Edit: I think ive found the perfect reference for the palm trees

this is looking really nice man, awesome stuff! :) In terms of lighting, i really like your choice of colours and animations you have on them. I'd maybe even suggest having some subtle animation on the blue lights on screen left, even just a subtle flicker every 50 frames, it'd just give a bit more life to that area. Everything else is looking solid, good job man! :)

Thanks Reece, they have a slight flicker in the material but I don't think it's coming through in the video at all so I'll turn that up. Good to hear from you dude!
